JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Quality Manager, the In-Process Inspector is responsible for monitoring and verifying fabrication and welding activities during pressure vessel manufacturing to ensure compliance with applicable codes, approved drawings, specifications, and internal quality procedures.

The role ensures full material identification and traceability, including material scanning, verification of material certificates, heat number tracking and transfer of material identification throughout the manufacturing process. It also ensures weld traceability, welder qualification compliance, welding procedure control, and completion of in-process inspections in accordance with applicable PED, ASME U-Stamp and project requirements.

The position coordinates required inspections and testing, including hydrostatic testing, Non-destructive testing activities, while supporting the preparation and coordination of welder qualification coupons, subcontractor inspections, client snag resolution and inspections by Notified Bodies and Authorized Inspection Agencies. The role ensures that all required inspections, examinations and tests are completed as fabrication progresses, with accurate documentation maintained to prevent avoidable delays to delivery. The position also provides quality inspection support to skid manufacturing operations when required.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Inspection and Monitoring

  • Perform inspection activities in accordance with applicable PED and ASME Code requirements,  project specifications and the company’s approved quality system, covering welding, fabrication, fit-up, assembly and related manufacturing activities.

  • Check joint preparation, root gaps, alignment, weld joint fit-up, dimensions and tolerances before welding.

  • Carry out visual weld inspections at appropriate stages of manufacture and verify that welds meet the applicable acceptance criteria.

  • Verify completion of required inspection stages before work proceeds to the next stage.

  • Check compliance with approved drawings, weld maps, fabrication procedures and customer-specific requirements.

  • Check dimensions, orientation, component positioning, nozzle locations, openings, reinforcement pads and other fabrication details against approved drawings.

  • Use appropriate calibrated measuring equipment for inspection and dimensional verification.

  • Record inspection results, as evidence for customer, third-party and regulatory reviews, and report deviations from specified tolerances.

  • Raise or report non-conformance reports (NCRs) for defects, incorrect materials, dimensional deviations or procedural non-compliance.

  • Travel to client sites and subcontractor facilities to carry out inspection activities, as required.

2. Material Identification, Scanning and Traceability

  • Scan material identification labels or other approved identification markings using the company’s material tracking system.

  • Confirm material grade, specification, size, heat number, batch number and other required identification details.

  • Verify that material identification is transferred correctly to cut pieces in accordance with approved procedures.

  • Identify and report missing, illegible, incorrect or conflicting material markings and prevent the use of unidentified material until the issue is resolved.

3. Welding Inspection, Welder Qualifications and Coupon Coordination

  • Verify that the correct Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is available and followed during welding.

  • Verify that welders are appropriately qualified for the welding processes and activities being performed, as required by the applicable code and project requirements.

  • Support welder qualification tests, including test scheduling, coupon preparation, witnessing, visual inspection, NDT and destructive testing, as applicable.

4. NDT Coordination and Management

  • Coordinate and arrange non-destructive testing (NDT) with approved external contractors in accordance with project requirements and applicable codes.

  • Maintain accurate records of NDT requests, examination results, repair status, repeat testing and outstanding inspections.

5. Notified Body and Third-Party Inspection

  • Support inspections by the Authorized Inspection Agency (AIA), Authorized Inspector (AI), Notified Body or other designated inspection personnel, as applicable to the project.

6. Snag Resolution and Subcontractor Inspections

  • Support the investigation and resolution of snags, defects and quality issues raised during manufacturing inspections, final inspections, factory acceptance tests and site activities within agreed deadlines.

  • Complete planned subcontractor inspections in accordance with approved Inspection Plans, including timely reporting of findings and follow-up of identified non-conformances.

7. Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to continuous improvement activities focused on quality, safety and operational performance.

8. Health, Safety and Housekeeping

  • Comply with all company health and safety procedures and site rules.

  • Wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) when conducting inspections.

  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents and hazards to the appropriate person.

    Education and Experience

  1. 3–7 years’ relevant experience in pressure vessel manufacturing, welding inspection or heavy fabrication within a quality-controlled manufacturing environment.

  2. Strong working knowledge of the ASME Pressure Vessel Code, ASME U-Stamp requirements, Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).

  3. Experience in in-process welding and fabrication inspection, including fit-up inspection, visual weld inspection, dimensional checks, hydrostatic testing and coordination of radiographic testing (RT) and other NDT activities.

  4. Good understanding of welding processes, including SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW and SAW, and their associated inspection requirements.

  5. Strong understanding of Welding Procedure Specification, Procedure Qualification Records, Welder
